Includes photographs of the eclipse taken through a telescope, a photo of the telescope, and correspondence and reports, including a published report by Commodore B.F. Sands, superintendent of the Naval Observatory. The Army party was led by Edward Curtis. Photographs by E.J. Ward.

Sands, B. F. (Benjamin Franklin), 1811-1883

B.F. Sands served as a navy lieutenant in the Mexican War, participating in operations on the Grijalva River under Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry. He later served in the Civil War and as director of the Naval Observatory, 1867-1874. Sands was made rear admiral in 1871, and he retired in 1874. He died in Washington, D.C., in 1883.
